Tithing

“Let each one give as he has decided in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion—for God loves a cheerful giver.”
(2 Corinthians 9:7 TLV)

The Christian Augustine made an interesting observation about the nature of tithing when he said: “We give earth, and receive heaven. We give things corruptible and receive the immortal. Lastly, we give what God has bestowed, and receive God Himself. Let us not continue to be poor.”

I attest that we never lose when we are giving our ties and offerings. God continually promises blessing to those who generously offer Him their support. But we should not give simply in hopes of getting. Our giving to God is an act of worship, not a financial ploy. We give to God because we love Him; and He gives to us out of His infinite love for us.

When we give, we are giving cheerfully and obediently to the Lord. Giving in order to “get more” is not a biblical principle. But those who faithfully give can rejoice, knowing that as a help meet the needs of others, God will meet their needs as well.
“The point is this: whoever sows sparingly shall also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully shall also reap bountifully. Let each one give as he has decided in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion—for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace overflow to you, so that by always having enough of everything, you may overflow in every good work.” (2 Corinthians 9:6-8 TLV)
